A case study: WellComm assessment in the early years

It’s great to share what’s working to improve young children’s speech, language and communication in different localities.

As part of Salford’s 0-25 transformation programme, Salford Royal’s speech therapists have teamed up with the council’s Starting Life Well service to introduce a new way of working to help three year olds achieve their potential.

WellComm has been used to provide a simple and effective way of identifying children’s language skills and identify children at risk of language delay. The pilot was initially trialled with a cluster of primary schools in Irlam and Cadishead and has since been extended to include all Salford’s Early years settings. The next stage is to roll this out with childminders.

Data has now been collected from early years schools and settings for over 4000 WellComm assessments and the results are really promising.
